Job Summary/Basic Function

Under general supervision and in accordance with departmentally established practices and expectations, adjunct faculty teach assigned courses in accordance with established syllabi; maintain office hours and accessibility to students; and advise students.

Minimum Qualifications

Masters Degree in Nursing from an accredited university program required or within one year of completion of Masters Degree in Nursing. Credentials and certifications including BLS must be current. Must be licensed or eligible for licensure by the New Mexico Board of Nursing. Experience in an NLN Associate Degree Nursing program is highly desirable.

Current and demonstrated knowledge in applicable course content; knowledge of current teaching methodologies and practices; of diverse learning styles; of tutorial units and related instructional learning laboratories; of evaluation methodologies; of record keeping; and of curriculum design and planning. Must possess strong verbal and written communication skills. Skill in problem solving; in time management; in listening and in critical thinking. Must have a sensitivity to and understanding of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, special needs, and ethnic backgrounds of college students. Ability to communicate information and ideas; and to speak clearly.

Job Duties


As part of their contracted duties and specified by their division Dean or Department Chair, Adjunct Faculty may be expected to perform the following:

1. Provide the most effective instruction possible in one’s discipline to insure that the educational needs of students are met and that students achieve specified learning objectives.
2. Teach assigned courses, whether on campus or off campus, day or evening, following the official syllabi and using approved textbooks and other learning materials.
3. Meet all classes regularly and on time, as scheduled, and for their full duration.
4. Establish learning objectives and outcomes for assigned courses.
5. Evaluate student performance (attainment of learning objectives) and assign grades.
6. Serve as academic advisor to students as assigned.
7. Maintain all office hours and make arrangements for appointments with students at other times.
8. Participate in the department’s/division’s review of courses and programs.
9. Upgrade the educational program by evaluating course content, student needs, and instructional methods; make recommendations for improvement.
10. Assist in the preparation of course syllabi; engage in curriculum development (revising and updating existing courses and programs, creating new courses and programs)
11. Evaluate support materials available to students in the library and make recommendations for improving collections in one’s field.
12. Keep accurate records of student attendance, grades, etc.
13. Make arrangements with the department chair or assistant dean for covering classes when scheduling an absence.
14. Meet all deadlines in submitting grades or other required information on students.
15. Attend all faculty meetings, other convocations as appropriate, and graduation exercises.
